What is this?

The climbing week of the year will be located in the Lofoten Islands the 1st. week of August 1999.  Climbers from all over the world are invited to join this happening at one of the finest climbingspots one could dream of.   Climbers,  you shouldn't miss this, so make sure you take this week off to join the fun in good company.

The past 3 years some of us dedicated one week of the year for climbing. A week we  are looking forward to all the year till it's suddenly there.  This has been a good tradition that we'd like to continue. This year we would like to invite more climbers to participate in Lofoten this summer.

Some images from previous climbing-weeks:
1998: Bergell, Albigna (Switzerland)
1997: Jotunheimen, Hurrungane (Norway)
1996: Sella & Arco  (Italy)

Lofoten Islands

The Lofoten Islands lie off  Norway's northern cost, west of Narvik and 200km north of the Artic Circle. They are a collection of five large and five smaller islands. Heavily glaciated and granitic, these islands offer a wealth of rock-climbing as well as both summer and winter mountaineering.
Climbing here is generally considered to have begun in 1889 with the ascent of "Vågakallen" (942m) by two local fishermen. The long climbing tradition in Lofoten has uncovered numerous perfect granite crags.
Worth noting is the local desire to keep the climbing adventurous. There are no sport climbs here and although bolts do occur from time to time on the crags, their use has been very minimal and the preference has bin to preserve somewhat run out leads.
